The FExpo is the showcase of creativity, innovation, and engineering imagination from first-year students in ENGR 1166: Foundations of Engineering! Each spring, students transform bold ideas into reality through hands-on projects including wind turbines, spacesuit helmets, bridges, hot air balloons, and more.
From 2024–2026, FExpo reached new heights with the introduction of the Solar-Powered Martian Habitat Project, inspired by the UConn STEAM Tree. Working in multidisciplinary and multilevel teams, students designed an interconnected habitat featuring seven collaborative solar-powered systems: a dwelling and carport, bridge, rover, pulse-monitoring station, radio tower, solar tree, and wind turbine. At FExpo, innovation takes center stage as teams proudly present their working designs, and posters to students, faculty, and the University community.
In Spring 2026, standout teams were recognized with awards for Winning Team, Best Project Poster, and Best Engineering Portfolio — celebrating the next generation of creative problem-solvers and engineers.
